The SDGs were created to address the world’s most pressing issues and promote a sustainable future for all. From poverty and hunger to climate change and gender inequality, these goals are meant to guide us towards a more just and equitable world. As a resident of Miri, I am proud to live in a city that is taking bold steps towards sustainability and social progress. The Miri Smart City initiative is a shining example of how a community can come together to achieve the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The solution components of the Miri Smart City Proof of Concept (MSCP) include a range of innovative solutions aimed at improving the quality of life in the city, including digital signage, safe city and safe park, smart drain, smart bus, smart truck, smart city app, Miri CARES, and Miri Tourism.
Here are some that are most memorable to me:
MCC improved the safety and security of the City Centre and Community Parks by deploying advanced technologies such as Face Recognition (FR) and Vehicle Tracking (VT), in addition to smart poles with panic buttons and surveillance cameras.

SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities
By improving safety and security in the city center and community parks, the initiative is contributing to making cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.
The high number of flood cases in Miri was addressed with the implementation of a smart drain solution, which collected data from water level sensors and cameras to determine the necessary rectification works. A mobile app was also provided to the public, allowing them to view the current water level at selected locations and act accordingly to reduce losses.
Miri CARES is a Case Tracking System that handles complaints and requests directed to the Command Centre, improving the efficiency and effectiveness of case monitoring.
Miri CARES (SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities and SDG 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions)
The Case Tracking System helps improve the efficiency and effectiveness of case monitoring, which contributes to sustainable and inclusive cities and communities, as well as promoting peace, justice and strong institutions.
In short, the Miri Smart City initiative is an ambitious and visionary project that is making a real impact on the lives of residents and aligning with the SDGs in meaningful ways. I am confident that with the continued commitment and cooperation of all members of the community, Miri will become a true beacon of sustainability and progress.
